How to Start a Podcast: 5 Useful Tips

Podcasts are no new phenomena. Yet it’s safe to say that it’s only really in recent years that podcasts have become a central part of our modern media landscape. New podcasts are popping up everywhere from the broadest to the most niche of topics as they are one of the most useful tools when it comes to building an engaged community around whatever your passion may be. Starting a successful podcast can be daunting, so we’ve come up with our top 5 tips to help you get started.

Define your niche

As the podcast industry becomes increasingly saturated, it’s important to have a clear idea of who and what your audience is targeting. Research existing podcasts and see what niche your podcast fits in best. More importantly, choose a field you are passionate about and will be willing to commit to.

Find a cohost you vibe with

It’s perfectly fine to host your podcast solo, but it can be handy to have a partner to bounce off of. This can prevent awkward silences and moments of a lost train of thought and add another dimension to the conversation. Find someone that balances your personality and can offer a different perspective to yours.

Practice the art of speech

Speaking coherently and articulately for a sustained period of time is a skill that takes time and practice. The best podcasts are unscripted and flow naturally without sounding forced. Practise your speech by recording yourself talking freely and articulating your words clearly, then listen back to see where you can improve.

Create a List of 25 Episodes with intriguing names

It’s important to think ahead when planning your podcast so that you have a clear trajectory and avoid becoming repetitive. Choose engaging titles that people are likely to search for within your field along with structured topics for each episode.

Get the right recording set up

Recording a podcast is fairly simple. You can record a podcast from anywhere so long as you have a decent microphone, computer and editing software. If you’re looking to take the quality of your recording up a notch, it’s worth looking into finding a studio that is soundproofed and equipped with high-quality equipment so you don’t need to purchase it yourself.
